I discovered Waterlogue from my Dad because he sent me the cutest photo of my little boy, but it looked as if the picture had been painted instead of a digital photo. This intrigued me, because it was different than the usual photo editing app.

Over the years I have seen images that have the "painted" effect applied through photoshop or other editing software. They are usually pretty basic and simple and one dimensional. The thing that I immediately liked about Waterlogue was how many different options and styles that were available. At the bottom of the screen there is a scroll bar with all the different options. I just clicked on the first one and it applied the effect. If I didn't like it, or wanted to try more, I just clicked on the next one. Functionality is about as simple as it could get- this is definitely idiot proof.

One small thing that was fun to watch, as it applied the effect, it slowly painted on the colors. So it was like you were actually watching the image be painted. You will need to appreciate this feature, otherwise you will be annoyed at the time it takes to apply the effects.

I didn't have any real problems with the app, the only thing I would have liked were some more creative borders for the pictures. Since I am taking a digital photo and making it look like a water color painting, I thought adding some vintage picture frames would be a nice feature. Or having some other border options other than a basic white border.

This app isn't something that I will use everyday, but I will use it occasionally when I get a great picture and want to give it some personality.

Below is a picture that my Dad took of my sister back in the 1980's and came from a 35mm slide.

I thoroughly enjoyed using Waterlogue, and while I enjoyed the final results of the artistic app, my favorite part was actually watching the step by step process of the paint effect take place. Waterlogue is a photo editing app that takes your photos and creates a literal work of art.

Within the app, you start out by either taking a live photo, or using an image you currently in any of your mobile albums. Once you choose your digital photo, work immediately starts taking place as brush strokes appear on your screen. There are multiple effects you can choose from depending on the look and style you are going for. While you can compare two effects next to one another, I do wish that the original image was shown so you could see just how cool the final product looks.

After you choose which effect you want your picture painted with, the work is not done. You can enlarge or shrink the image, add a border, or even lighten or darken the photo depending on your taste. Then, once all your selections are made, it's time to save!

You can save your image directly to your camera roll, and I love that it saves as a separate image, NOT over the original image like other apps I've tested. You can also upload it directly to social media, or email them to friends and loved ones to show off. One thing that I thought was cool and unique to Waterlogue is that they will even create a postcard out of the final artwork to physically mail to whoever you want! You can also choose image size and format of the image to meet your needs.

Overall, this app is extremely easy to use- there isn't even a need for a tutorial. While I wish that you could compare the artwork with the original image, I love the ease of use, originality of the effects, and the feel of the app which is why I give Waterlogue 4 out of 5 stars.
